AD submits objections to MEPA on Hondoq development

Alternattiva Demokratika, The Green Party has said that it has submitted its objections to MEPA against the proposed development at Hondoq ir-Rummien, Qala (PA 03798/02).

“Should the proposed development be approved, this would result in irreversable ecological damage, as well as social injustice due to the loss of public land and bathing areas for private business interests. Much of the swimming area will be lost in order to give way to a yacht marina, due to access of boats and pollution of sea water. The EIA should take account of such factors.”

they went on to say that the proposed development is a another case of more land speculation with the only beneficiaries being the owners of the land. The community loses on all counts. There is no need of increasing more built up land in Gozo which already boasts of the national record of unoccupied property as is clearly documented in the last Census.

AD concluded by saying that it believes that the derelict quarry of Hondoq ir-Rummien should be transformed into a park complemented with an afforestation project, guaranteeing free public access to Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay. The area should be transformed into an ecological park with blue-flag beach status.
